Turn Marine Canvas Sketches into CAD Patterns

LaunchAI converts marine canvas sketches and measured templates into CAD drawings. Create enclosure, cover and cushion panel patterns with seam and hardware notes. The drawing is built from the supplied measurements, notes and specifications. Unclear details are flagged for your team to review.

For owners, estimators and patterners at marine canvas, boat cover, enclosure and marine upholstery shops

April, Saturday, 8:00. Everybody launches Memorial Day.

The phone's been going since the marina opened. A customer texted four photos of a torn enclosure with his kid holding the tape, and the tape is in two of them. Your installer's dock sketch from yesterday says "S/B 84 @ rail, 32½ aft, 29?" in pencil that got wet. A Dux-Pattern template is rolled up on the shop floor with Sharpie panel numbers, snap marks and zipper breaks. An email says "same cover as last year, new T-top." Someone dropped off six V-berth cushions with a note: thicker foam, Dry Fast, same vinyl.

So you build the quote one panel at a time. Yards of Sunbrella, square feet of Strataglass, feet of #10 zipper, snaps and Common Sense fasteners, frame changes, labor. Then the pattern: digitize the template, add seam allowance and hems, set the window inset, mark the zipper breaks, label every panel starboard to port, nest it on the roll and send it to the plotter.

You can do it in your sleep, and in April you nearly do. Every hour spent re-reading a wet sketch is an hour the cutting table sits idle, and the boat owner who waits too long finds a shop that answered first.

What the job looks like today

  1. Decode the sketch

Which side, inside or outside the tube, and what the "?" meant.

  2. Price every panel

Yards, square feet of clear, feet of zipper, snaps, labor.

  3. Set up the pattern

Digitize, add allowances, inset the windows, mark the breaks.

  4. Label and nest

Starboard to port, then onto the roll and the plotter.

  5. Chase the gaps

Text the customer about the windows, call the installer about the port side.

Where it goes wrong

The boat doesn't care what the tape said

Canvas remakes rarely come from bad sewing. They come from a measurement that meant something else on the dock.

  • Inside or outside the tube?

"84 at the rail" could be to the inside of the stanchion, the outside, or the center of the tube. That's the difference between a curtain that snaps tight and one with a gap the rain finds.

  • Port is not a mirror

Hulls aren't symmetrical and neither are the frames. "Same both sides" means one side wasn't measured, and the curtain cut as a mirror won't reach the snaps.

  • "Isinglass" is not a spec

The customer means clear windows. Strataglass or press-polished, 30 or 40 gauge, or polycarbonate? The price changes a lot and so does how long it stays clear.

  • "Use the old snaps"

The existing studs set every panel edge. If nobody wrote down the spacing, the new curtain lands half an inch off every stud on the rail.

Why it's still manual

Software hasn't fixed this. Here's why.

Canvas shops have bought great patterning tools. The job still starts as a wet dock sketch and a phone full of photos.

  • Your CAD and quoting software

    Waits for someone to type

PatternSmith, MPanel, ExactFlat and a cutting table make patterns fast and accurate once the shape and the notes are in. They don't read the Sharpie on a template or the pencil on a dock sketch.

  • Generic AI and OCR models

    Confidently wrong

Paste a dock sketch into a chat model and it reads "S/B" as Sunbrella, "snaps 6 OC" as 60C, drops the "?" after the forward edge, and invents a port side that was never measured. Nothing tells you which numbers it made up.

  • Image-to-CAD converters

    Traces lines, not intent

Image-to-CAD converters trace the outline in the photo, perspective and all. You get a curtain shape skewed by the camera angle, with no seam allowance, no zipper breaks and no idea which panel it was.

  • Measuring apps and configurators

    Only if everyone uses them

CADShot, PhotoModeler and digitizers capture template outlines well. The quote, the materials, the panel notes and what the customer said on the phone still get typed by hand.

How the agent does it

From sketches to CAD drawings and layouts

LaunchAI converts the sketch and its measurements into CAD geometry, applies your drawing standards and prepares the related order information. Missing dimensions and unclear notes are flagged for your team to review.

FAQ

Marine canvas & upholstery: questions we hear

Does this replace templating on the boat?

No. Your patterner still templates the boat. The agent handles what comes before and after: the quote from the first photos and sketch, and the panel setup, labels and materials once the template is back in the shop.

Can it read the marks on our templates?

It reads the panel numbers, snap marks, zipper breaks and notes from a photo of the template. Capturing the outline itself stays with your digitizer, CADShot or PhotoModeler; the agent ties the notes to the right panels.

We quote in Excel and QuickBooks. Do we need new software?

No. LaunchAI agents use the software you already have, through the screen, with your logins. If you plot from PatternSmith or MPanel, it works there too.

What if the customer only measured one side?

The agent never mirrors a side silently. It flags it, drafts a note to your installer or the customer, and can quote it as a mirror with that assumption written on the quote, if you allow that.

Who approves before we cut?

You or your lead patterner. The agent stops at the review screen with the uncertain value highlighted. Nothing gets cut or sent to the customer until someone signs off.

Does it do cushions and upholstery too?

Yes. Foam type and thickness, piping, the bevel on the hull side, separate port and starboard patterns, vinyl and thread: read from the old cushions, photos and notes, priced and set up the same way.
