Turn Cover Measure Sheets into CAD Patterns

LaunchAI converts pool cover measure sheets and spa templates into CAD drawings. Create cover patterns, strap plans and anchor layouts from field measurements. The drawing is built from the supplied measurements, notes and specifications. Unclear details are flagged for your team to review.

For CAD departments, order desks and plant managers at pool safety cover and hot tub cover manufacturers

September. Every pool in three states closes in five weeks.

The safety-cover forms started in August and now they come in stacks. As images: faxed, texted, scanned at an angle, photographed on a clipboard with a thumb in the corner. A line staked four feet off the long side, A on the left, B on the right, then forty-some numbered points with an A tape and a B tape for each one, a step drawn as a box, a rock waterfall drawn as a cloud, and "pavers" or "wood deck" written somewhere if you're lucky. Under them, a tube of spa templates: clear plastic, Sharpie line around the lip, "fold" with an arrow, "top" written on the wrong side.

So you plot it. Point 1, A 12' 3", B 22' 8", swing two arcs, mark the intersection. Point 2. Point 3. At point 14 the outline kinks and you squint at the image trying to decide if that B is 9' 7" or 9' 1". Then the cross-checks, if they sent any. Then the strap grid, five feet on center, squared to the long side, the step pocket, the springs, an anchor for every strap set back from the coping and matched to whatever the deck is made of. Then the order screen: mesh or solid, color, overlap, anchor type, PO. Then a plot back to the dealer to sign.

Get one point wrong and it's a custom mesh cover with a strap over the step, or an anchor that lands in a paver joint, or a cover that is the perfect mirror image of the pool. That's a remake, a second install trip, and a dealer explaining to a homeowner why the pool still isn't covered on Halloween.

What the job looks like today

  1. Sort the stack

Forms, templates, emails and voicemails that belong to the same pool.

  2. Plot every point

Two arcs per point, forty to eighty points, by hand.

  3. Lay out the cover

Straps, springs, step pockets and anchors around every obstruction.

  4. Chase the gaps

Deck material, color, the smudged B tape. Call the dealer, wait.

  5. Send the plot

Approval drawing out, corrections back, then cut and sew.

Where it goes wrong

The tape was right. The cover still didn't fit.

Most bad covers start with a good measurement that meant something else.

  • Walked the wrong way

Your form says clockwise from A. The tech started at the step and went the other way. Every point is perfect, and the cover you plot is the mirror image of the pool.

  • The obstruction in the middle of the list

A rock waterfall inside the overlap, numbered as point 23 between two coping points. Plot it as perimeter and the cover has a bulge; anchors can't go in the rock either.

  • "Deck" is not a deck material

Concrete takes a drilled anchor, pavers move, wood needs a different anchor, and two feet of deck then lawn needs a short-deck solution. The form says "deck" and the email says something else.

  • Water-to-water on a spa

The dealer measured inside the acrylic, not across the lip. Build to that and the cover sits inside the edge and drops into the tub.

Why it's still manual

Software hasn't fixed this. Here's why.

Cover makers have plotting programs, CAD and dealer apps. The form still arrives on paper in September, and someone still types it.

  • Your CAD and quoting software

    Waits for someone to type

AutoCAD or your own plotting program will intersect two arcs all day once somebody has typed the A and B for every point. SolidWorks and pattern add-ons lay out panels and straps. None of them reads an image of a form, and none of them notices the tech walked counterclockwise.

  • Generic AI and OCR models

    Confidently wrong

Generic OCR reads 21'4 as 21.4, loses the foot mark off 9'7, drops the circled point number on the sketch, and fills a smudged B tape with something that looks right. On a mesh cover, looks right is a strap that lands in the pool.

  • Image-to-CAD converters

    Traces lines, not intent

Image-to-CAD converters trace the dealer's freehand outline, which was drawn on a truck hood and is not to scale. The pool lives in the point table; converters don't read it.

  • Measuring apps and configurators

    Only if everyone uses them

The measuring app you gave dealers works for the dealers who use it. The rest still send the paper form as an image (faxed, texted, scanned), and nobody changes how they measure in closing season.

How the agent does it

From sketches to CAD drawings and layouts

LaunchAI converts the sketch and its measurements into CAD geometry, applies your drawing standards and prepares the related order information. Missing dimensions and unclear notes are flagged for your team to review.

  1. Reads the form

Every point, tape, obstruction and note, with a confidence score on each value.

  2. Triangulates the shape

Plots every point, checks direction and cross-checks, flags the point that doesn't close.

  3. Lays out the cover

Straps, springs and anchors in your CAD, from your rules and the dealer's deck.

  4. Fills the order

Mesh or solid, color, anchors, PO, each value with its source.

  5. Your drafter approves

Confirm the one flagged point; the approval plot goes to the dealer.

The agent plotted 42 points and laid out straps and anchors. One point's B distance doesn't agree with its neighbours.

Agent suggests: Re-check point 14 before approving. The B distance reads as 9' 7", which puts the coping 2" outside the curve.

FAQ

Safety & spa covers: questions we hear

Can it plot a cover from an image of a hand-filled A-B form?

Yes. It reads each point's A and B tapes, triangulates the shape, checks the cross-measurements and the direction the points were taken, and scores how sure it is of every value. A smudged tape goes to your drafter, not into the cover.

What happens when a point is missing or doesn't close?

It never invents a distance. It plots the rest, marks the point that disagrees with its neighbours, and drafts the note to the dealer: which point, what it read, and what would make it close.

We plot in AutoCAD and our own plotting program. Do we need an integration?

No. LaunchAI agents work through the screen with your logins, on your machines. If your drafter can do it at a desk in AutoCAD, your plotting program and the order screen, the agent can too.

Does it handle hot tub covers from traced templates?

Yes. A photo of the template with a tape in the frame, plus the order form, becomes a dimensioned cover with fold, taper, skirt and strap positions. If the dealer gave water-to-water or half measurements, it flags that instead of building to them.

Who approves before anything is cut?

Your drafter, every time. The agent prepares the plot and the order; a person confirms the flagged values, and the dealer still signs the approval drawing the way they do today.

Do you handle vinyl liners too?

Yes. Liner measure sheets use the same A-B method plus depths and steps. See vinyl pool liners.
